Senior Financial Accountant | 6 Month FTC | Insurance

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a high-performing finance team at a global and listed insurance organisation on a 6-month contract basis. Based in Sydney's CBD, this position offers a chance to step into a broad and hands-on financial accounting position with exposure to APRA, US GAAP, and indirect tax.

Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, the Senior Financial Accountant will play a key role in supporting financial operations, regulatory reporting, and month-end and year-end processes.

The Responsibilities:

  • Financial & Management Reporting: Support the preparation of quarterly CFO reports and reconciliation of local results to US GAAP reporting standards, providing insight into key financial metrics and variances.
  • Regulatory Reporting: Assist in the preparation and timely submission of APRA returns, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
  • Month-End Close: Perform monthly reconciliations between insurance systems and the general ledger; post journal entries and ensure accurate and complete month, quarter, and year-end close processes.
  • Balance Sheet Oversight: Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, investigate variances, and ensure robust documentation to support audit and internal review requirements.
  • Industry Reporting: Complete and submit statutory surveys and reporting to government bodies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
  • Audit Management: Act as a key contact during the annual external audit process by responding to audit queries and providing supporting documentation.
  • Tax Compliance: Work with the Finance Operations team to prepare and lodge indirect tax returns, including GST and stamp duty, and support preparation of the FBT and income tax return.

About You:

  • CA or CPA qualified with 5+ years' commercial accounting experience in Insurance, Financial Services or Professional Services preferred.
  • Solid understanding of accounting standards and regulatory reporting, ideally with IFRS 17 exposure.
  • Can-do attitude with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience with ERP systems.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and partner across business units.

To Note:

  • Candidates with solely audit experience aren't being considered at this time.
  • They operate a flexible work from setup of 3 days in the office.
  • Insurance industry experience is highly preferred, alternatively financial services or professional services experience is highly desirable.
  • Must be available in 2 weeks notice or less.
