Financial Controller | Legal

Join a long standing, innovative and growing legal firm in a broad, hands-on finance function. Must come from Legal, Business Services or F.S industry

MARS are partnering with a growing and well-established law firm in Sydney CBD, that's seeking an experienced finance professional to lead its finance function, oversee statutory and trust compliance, and provide strategic financial guidance to the leadership team.

The firm has a strong reputation within the legal sector, handling a diverse mix of complex client matters across multiple practice areas. They are committed to delivering excellent outcomes for clients while fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.

The Opportunity:

In this hands-on leadership role, you will:

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting
  • Prepare management accounts, divisional reporting packs, and variance analysis
  • Drive budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and scenario planning to support growth
  • Oversee trust accounting, including reconciliations, daily approvals, and statutory compliance
  • Manage GST, FBT, payroll tax, BAS/IAS submissions, liaising with external auditors and tax advisors
  • Supervise core finance functions such as AP/AR, billing, GL, and payroll, ensuring effective processes
  • Mentor and support a small, high-performing finance team, fostering efficiency and development
  • Partner with the CEO and Directors to deliver insight, recommendations, and strategies for financial performance
  • Ensure robust governance and compliance with regulatory, trust, and professional standards

About You:

  • CA/CPA qualified (or equivalent) with 8+ years' accounting experience
  • Legal experience is highly desirable but open to business services and financial services backgrounds
  • Trust accounting experience preferred
  • Confident and comfortable operating in a hands-on finance position
  • Deep technical accounting knowledge and familiarity with regulatory standards
  • High attention to detail with the ability to deliver under pressure
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills
