Financial Controller – Legal Experience Essential

The Company:

A leading and well-established law firm in Sydney CBD is seeking an experienced Financial Controller from a legal background, to lead its finance function, oversee statutory and trust compliance, and provide strategic financial guidance to the leadership team.

The Opportunity:

In this hands-on leadership role, you will:

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting
  • Prepare management accounts, divisional reporting packs, and variance analysis
  • Drive budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and scenario planning to support growth
  • Oversee trust accounting, including reconciliations, daily approvals, and statutory compliance
  • Manage GST, FBT, payroll tax, BAS/IAS submissions, liaising with external auditors and tax advisors
  • Supervise core finance functions such as AP/AR, billing, GL, and payroll, ensuring effective processes
  • Mentor and support a high-performing finance team, fostering efficiency and development
  • Partner with the CEO and Directors to deliver insight, recommendations, and strategies for financial performance
  • Ensure robust governance and compliance with regulatory, trust, and professional standards


About You:

  • CA/CPA qualified (or equivalent) with 8+ years' experience in senior finance or Financial Controller roles
  • Strong legal sector experience is essential - plaintiff personal injury exposure highly desirable
  • Trust accounting experience preferred
  • Deep technical accounting knowledge and familiarity with regulatory standards
  • Experience with multi-entity structures and ideally global finance operations
  • High attention to detail with the ability to deliver under pressure
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills
