Seeking an experienced policy and advocacy professional, to work within a brilliant membership based organisation.

Looking for an experienced Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer to assist in the development and implementation of health policies and strategies, within a membership-based organisation.


Purpose of the role:

  • Support Policy & Advocacy work in the development, dissemination, implementation of health policies, positions, strategies, initiatives
  • Be a key part of advocacy work, connecting expertise and experience within the policy and advocacy portfolio
  • Develop policy responses and strategies to the policy, political and professional issues relevant to the organisation.


Role Description:

  • Develop policy, advocacy and communications strategies to support policy priorities
  • Develop policies, position statements, advocacy materials on matters as required, based on input and advice
  • Develop and implement strategies to engage the membership with the policy & advocacy work
  • Identify opportunities engaging advocacy initiative
  • Build effective relationships with key stakeholders; internally and with external organisations
  • Development of persuasive written materials to effectively communicate views and advocate positions
  • Prepare background papers, submissions and briefs to inform decision making and contribute to advocacy
  • Participate in the provision of rapid responses to health policy issues as they arise
  • Remain up-to-date and well informed on policy matters, advocacy tools and resources that would support the forefront of health policy and advocacy


Essential Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in health policy, communications, political science or related disciplines
  • Experience in the development of health policies, position statements and briefing papers
  • Advocacy and communications experience
  • Knowledge of the Australian and New Zealand government and health system structures
  • Highly developed analytical skills, political judgement and strategic thinking
  • Strong skills in stakeholder engagement and relationship management
  • Ability to work within a context of ambiguity and identify potential solutions
  • Proven track record in developing effective advocacy strategies and materials
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially the ability to adapt writing style to a specific audience and /or purpose and with attention to detail
  • Highly computer literate in Microsoft packages
  • Experience of working with membership organisation, committees or working groups
